Chitabe Concession
Sandibe Camp is stylish, comfortable and totally original in its design. It has been built in a grove of jackalberry, fig tree and ilala palms without a single tree being cut down.
The main boma is evidence to this with thick branches extending through its walls and roofs. Huge tree trunks hold up the high thatched roof where fruit-bats sleep and baboons constantly play on the wooden beams. It's not unusual to look up from lunch and find an inquisitive baboon high up above having a good look at you. The fruit bats disappear as the sun goes down and return during the early breakfasting hours.
Just under the eaves of the roof you'll find an upper level of comfortable couches overlooking the lower with its ethnic rugs, couches and armchairs. There are also a couple hammocks hanging in the trees at the front of the building. Outside there's a small sunny pool with lots of comfy sun-loungers, a wine cellar and small shop.
Paths meander through the forest and lead to eight clay and thatch chalets. Each chalet has a north African feel with the clay walls and bright gauze netting hanging over the large beds. The bathroom consists of double basins behind the bed partition, a separate toilet and an outdoor shower with some great shower products. There are books and magazines in the rooms and even small decanters of amarula and sherry for nightcaps. Outside, steps lead up to a small raised deck with table and chairs and views of the Santantadibe River and reedbeds. This great expanse of delta comes alive at night with thousands of fire flies flickering on and off.
Activities at Sandibe include game drives, walks and mokoro trips when flood levels are high. Game drives are particularly good at Sandibe, taken slowly with both a guide and spotter to accompany you. Perhaps it is to this we can attribute their skill at finding the more elusive animals such as leopard and wild dog.
