Reasons To
Visit Botswana

  • Wetlands of the Okavango

The Okavango Delta is a labyrinth of waterways linking secret lagoons and marshlands, where hippo splash in the water and elephants drink at the shallows. Boat trips take you to inaccessible locations and hidden islands for a glorious spot of solitude and wildlife spotting, before a relaxing sundowner drink amongst the reeds.

  • Big Cats & Safari Wildlife

On a game drive in the Delta, Linyanti or Chobe, you soon discover Botswana’s phenomenal array of wildlife. Lions are often on the prowl in the morning while night drives increase your chances of spotting leopard and other nocturnal species. As well as the cats there are thriving populations of elephant, hippo, giraffe, buffalo and even wild dog.

  • Birds

From the water birds of the Delta to the sand grouse of the Kalahari and flamingos on the Makgadikgadi Pans, Botswana is a twitcher’s paradise. Rare species like the Pel’s fishing owl, and African pygmy goose are commonly found, with a trip to Chobe, the Delta and the Kalahari offering an unrivalled level of ornithological interest.

  • Bushmen

Bushman history is an intrinsic element in the evolution of humanity, and nowhere is this more apparent than in Botswana. Bushman communities have survived on the Makgadikgadi Pans and in areas of western Botswana for centuries. A visit there now allows you to interact with them, experiencing first hand how they cook, hunt, eat and live.

  • Mokoro Trips

Slipping through the Delta's mazy waterways and tall papyrus in a mokoro is the most relaxing way to view game. Serenely moving along with only the gurgle of the water passing under your craft, you encounter lechwe grazing in the shallows, kingfishers perched on overhanging branches and crocodiles lurking in dark corners.

  • Salt Pans

On the Makgadikgadi Pans you experience an ethereal lunar landscape unlike anywhere else in Africa. It is possible to see the curvature of the earth, sleep out under the stars, and at some times of the year watch a great wildlife migration. Although more thickly vegetated, Nxai and Tau Pans also offer unique landscapes and habitats.

Accommodation in Botswana: Tau Pan Lodge

This is a great new addition to the Central Kalahari and really opens a whole new area. The lodge has the most wonderful location and is perfect for those people who want an excellent safari experience well away from the Delta hotspots.

Tau Pan Lodge

Central Kalahari

Recently opened by Kwando Safaris, Tau Pan Camp offers a very different safari experience to that found elsewhere in Botswana.

The Central Kalahari, at times a harsh and inhospitable region, is the largest game reserve in the world, covering 52,800 sq kms. Game concentrations are at their highest during the rains in the first quarter of the year. At this time the park receives the migratory species such as springbok, zebra and wildebeest, providing a high point to any safari experience. Predators also abound with plentiful lions, especially the famous Kalahari black maned lion, plus cheetah, leopard and jackal. On rare occasions wild dog and the secretive brown hyena are also observed. Birdlife is certainly plentiful, with the worlds heaviest flying bird the kori bustard frequently spotted and the amusingly hair-styled secretary birds regularly seen strutting across the plains.

Later in the year the animals tend to move away from the open valley areas making game viewing a more challenging undertaking. However, it is at this time of year that you experience the true wilderness of the Central Kalahari, with other tourists few and far between.

The camp consists of eight custom built desert chalets, built under thatch in order to remain cool even during the heat of the year. The rooms are large and spacious, positioned on a ridge so that they catch the breeze and boast magnificent views down to the man made waterhole and Tau Pan beyond. Each room comes with either a twin or double bed, an indoor and outdoor shower and a lovely outside deck with comfy chairs.

The camp also has a small swimming pool and a lovely central lodge area where you will generally sit down with your fellow guests and enjoy communal dining at the end of an adventurous day.
