Traditional music festival entertains Botswana: 24-04-2008
May is the month for Maitisong, Botswana's biggest annual festival of performing arts, with the massive event occurring in venues all over the city of Gaborone.
The festival sees theatre, music and dance events in a variety of different styles and traditions, with stalls serving local food and drink to keep the performers and the spectators energised.
The festival started in 1987 and became an annual festival described as an event of non-stop Gospel, kwaito and Afro-pop shows. "Maitisong has certainly made its mark in a way that the founders could not have foreseen," the organisers say.
Four different stages host the event and classical performances and modern acts are often combined for some original displays.
Marimba music - a traditional style of African music - is also on display.
