Tailor Made Holidays in Gabon: Highlights

Enjoy the birdlife and scenery of the tranquil Lakes

The Ogooue River splits into two channels at Lambarene, to the east of Libreville, before reuniting in a large alluvial plain with a series of beautiful lakes fringed by papyrus marshes, reedbeds and forests. This is one of the largest deltas in Africa, extending all the way to Port Gentil on the coast, and is now a protected area. The scenery is lovely here (particularly in the lush rainy season) and this area boasts a fantastic array of birdlife including herons, spoonbills, skimmers, egrets, pelicans and more.

Watch wildlife on the beach at Loango National Park

The Loango National Park is a huge area of lagoon and forest savannah that stretches all the way to the wild beaches crashed by Atlantic rollers. Here you may encounter rich and varied wildlife such as forest elephant, buffalo, red river hog and primates, all making their way to the salt licks on the sandy shores. Turtles come onto the beaches to lay their eggs from October to January, while dolphins and whales can be found in the sea itself. The ultimate sighting has to be a surfing hippo crashing through the waves, though a little luck is necessary for this particular treat.
