Straddling the equator this beautiful, relatively undiscovered destination, is crying out for tourists with a sense of adventure. To see lowland gorillas or elephants deep in the rainforest remains one of the great African wildlife experiences.

Gabon remains one of the true areas of untouched and unknown wilderness in Central Africa. This stable but little-known country, made rich from off-shore oil reserves, is now turning its attention to the protection of its environmental assets with the recent creation of 13 national parks.
Gabon’s natural treasures include vast swathes of tropical rainforest, home to lowland gorillas, chimpanzees, forest elephant, buffalo and over 680 bird species. The forests stretch all the way to the coast’s wild beaches where humpback whales can be seen breaching from July to September. Turtles nest from October to January and at all times of the year elephant and buffalo are often found wandering over the sands and very occasionally hippo are found in the surf. Eco-tourism is beginning to take off in Gabon and a few very basic camps have been built alongside research stations for guests to stay in. But it is still early days and itineraries never go to plan.
For those who are prepared to leave their watches at home, and who have a love of wildlife and a sense of adventure Gabon could be just what you are looking for. But in Gabon, be prepared to expect the unexpected!
