- Watch wildlife on the beach at Loango National Park
This itinerary explores the stunning Loango National Park: Gabon’s “jewel in the crown” among its wild national parks. The park covers huge tracts of pristine tropical rainforest and open areas of savannah extending to the wild wave-crashed Atlantic beaches where elephant, buffalo and hippo may be seen on the sands. You will access this remote and wild area by light aircraft and then spend 8 nights staying in the luxury Loango Lodge and its simple bushcamps dotted around the park. Your days will be spent exploring the park and seeing its wildlife with your safari guides on game drives, walks and boat cruises.
Extensions
Fly by light aircraft to either Ivindo or Lope National Parks to experience some of Gabon’s wildest and most off-the-beaten-track areas where few but wildlife researchers have previously ventured. Spend a few days viewing the wildlife in the remote Langoue Bai where lowland gorilla troops are frequent visitors or travel to Lope’s savannah areas where in the dry season the brightly coloured mandrill monkeys congregate for the breeding season.
Alternatively for some relaxation time you may like to fly to the tropical islands of Sao Tome & Principe, a former Portuguese colony, 300 kilometres off the coast of Gabon. You can spend a few nights relaxing at a beach lodge and enjoying activities such as scuba diving, fishing, visits to the old colonial plantation houses and trekking in the Obo National Park.
