Kenya to reopen embassy in Somalia: 23-08-2007

Kenya is to make plans towards opening its embassy in its war-torn neighbouring country, Somalia.
This comes as the Kenyan ambassador to Somalia, Ken Visitia, has pledged to strengthen ties between the two countries. He also added that he sees great potential for the country to become a top tourist destination.
Currently in Somalia's capital, Mogadishu, Mr Visitia said: "This country is beautiful. We believe Somalia has had a conflict for too long. It can be a good tourist destination. The buildings can be renovated if peace prevails."
This comes after Somalia was plunged into disorder following years of civil unrest. Mr Visitia also added that he hoped to send in troops from Kenya to help establish peace in Somalia.
Somalia has the longest and least-policed coastline on mainland Africa. Its capital of Mogadishu was previously an important port town and still maintains much of its interesting architecture.
While the city currently remains dangerous, Mr Visitia hopes that the connections with Kenya will change that.
"I do not expect my embassy to be barricaded. It will be open to all," he said.
