Pay a visit to the slave caves and coral boardwalk of Shimoni: 07-11-2008

Travellers on safari in Kenya may wish to take a break from tiger tracking and visit the Shimoni caves on the Mombasa South Coast.
The caves serve as a dark reminder of Africa's slave trading past and were used to store prisoners prior to them being transported to Zanzibar's slave markets, according to eastandard.net.
The slaves were shackled to the walls of the caves, with the hooks still visible today.
According to the website, if anti-slavery authorities were thought to be on their way, the slave traders would throw the slaves into the shark infested waters to get rid of the "evidence".
Another place of interest nearby is the local coral boardwalk where travellers can help the local community by paying a small fee to enter and study the beautiful coral reef.
Maintained by local women, the boardwalk is used to finance community projects such as health centres.
The east African nation of Kenya is officially known as the Republic of Kenya. It shares borders with Ethiopia, Somalia, Tanzania, Uganda and Sudan and has a coastline overlooking the Indian Ocean.
