White rhino born in safari park: 10-09-2007

White rhino born in safari park18274068A baby white rhinoceros named Mazumba is the new addition at a safari park in Scotland.

The rhino is the first to be born as part of Drummond Safari Park's two-year breeding plan and appeared five weeks later than expected but her mother Dorothy seems to be coping well with the new arrival.

Although white rhinos are no longer regarded as endangered they are still subject to widespread conservation to ensure their long-term survival in the wild because of the threat of poachers attempting to take their precious horns.

Weighing around 6,000 pounds each, white rhinos are impressive and surprisingly nimble, often reaching speeds up to 30mph.

Anyone looking to see a white rhino in its natural habitat should head to South Africa where the southern white rhino population is estimated to be around 11,600 - the largest subspecies of rhino anywhere in the world. The large numbers are due to a number of conservation programmes which have focused on ensuring sufficient food and space as well as appropriate breeding partners.
