Funzi Keys is one of East Africa's most exclusive beach retreats. It manages to cater for your every need whilst being incredibly low key. There is nothing flash, nor ostentatious, yet you have every comfort. This reflects the character of Alessandro and Claudia your hosts. Warm, welcoming and with a good sense of humour the place is very friendly and you feel very much at home.
Above the white sandy beach the main building is made of whitewashed walls and a tall makuti thatch roof. It is two stories, the ground floor housing a small bar, very large wooden dhow and comfortable chairs. Upstairs the dining room is shady, cool and catches the breeze. Food is simply superb at Funzi. There is no menu, the four chefs (Chinese, Italian, Japanese & Indian) will cook you what you want and serve it exactly where you want. So if you would like a cold gazpacho with fresh crab salad at the pool at lunch and then sashimi in the evenings then that is what you can have.
On both sides of the dining room, tucked into the mangroves are nine seafront cottages and eight garden view cottages. The seafront cottages are made of stone and thatch and are extremely spacious and comfortable. Double or twin beds are near the water so you can always hear the waves splashing. There is a Jacuzzi in the main bedroom, baskets of fresh fruit, a cool box with every kind of drink and, when you arrive, champagne on ice to set the tone. The en suite bathroom has a large shower and plentiful bath products. The garden view rooms are set back from the beach and are slightly smaller with no Jacuzzi but still very comfortable.
There is plenty to do from Funzi. The island is near the Mpungati marine park and boat trips for snorkelling and diving are rewarding. Other water-sports include windsurfers and sailing boats or alternatively you might like to relax by the 45 metre pool with a book.
