Places to See and Stay: Kiwayu - Kenya

Visit Kenyas Coastline

Arriving at Kiwayu by air

Kiwayu is situated on the mainland at the far north of Kenya, about 30 miles north of Lamu. There are no towns up in this part of Kenya, just miles of deserted beaches with soft white sand. Behind the beach lie the Dodori and Boni Game Reserves which are total wildernesses and home to no lodges. It is thus an isolated but totally idyllic spot.

For centuries Kiwayu used to be a calling point for the Arab dhows which traded in ivory, carpets and Zanzibar chests. They stopped here on their way from Zanzibar and Mombasa before continuing up to Arabia. Sailors found a safe anchorage and warm welcome in this little corner of coastline, a tradition that continues to this day.

There are few places in the world which can boast the seclusion that Kiwayu has. The only visitors are fisherman, the dhows that still go to collect water and the occasional sports fisherman in search of a marlin fish, which are then released back into the sea.
