Mfangano Island Camp is situated on Mfangano Island, an idyllic little spot on Lake Victoria. Landing on a dirt runway and stepping out of the plane you are greeted by local children before walking down to the rickety jetty to get into your boat to the camp. Boating along the shoreline you see tiny fishing villages with thatched roofs tucked under mango and papaya trees. Dhows dot the water as fisherman sail out to catch tilapia, Nile perch and more, to eat or sell at the market. The island has a very friendly and laid back feel. After about ten minutes here you cannot fail to relax also.
Mfangano Island Camp will enchant you. Terracotta cottages sit in natural gardens on emerald lawns or appear party hidden on rocky banks under giant fig trees. A jetty extends from green grass and circular stone steps. The shore is interesting with jutting dark rocks, driftwood and colourful canoes. Behind it rise steep forested hills with massive boulders for summits. The buildings of Mfangano are constructed in local Luo style, with reddish clay walls and thatched roofs lined with banana leave. They all have spectacular views over the water and are open to the lake breeze. Just steps up from the jetty, is the airy lounge with comfy chairs. The dining area is built higher on the rocky hillside also has open sides and looks down across the lake. Here, the most superb meals are cooked. The six spacious cottages are each slightly different in design and style and have many windows with nets and lovely views. The style of service at Mfangano is very personal and friendly and you feel like part of a private family. The atmosphere is very relaxing and laid back and overall you couldn't find a better place to relax.
