- Swim in a rock pool in Isalo National Park
This itinerary is a leisurely trip through the towns, villages and national parks of Southern Madagascar. As you drive you might pass by paddy fields, overtake zebu cattle ambling along and stop to buy bananas from a brightly coloured roadside stall. It is easy to see why the road from Tana to Tulear is one of the most scenic in the country.
You start your trip in Tana where you meet your private driver-guide and set off heading south. After a night in Antsirabe, home to the Merina people you head for Ranomafana, a lush east coast rainforest with steep hillsides, tumbling waterfalls and plenty of wildlife. Enjoy hikes through the forest in search of the golden bamboo lemur, Milne-Edwards sifaka, red-bellied lemurs, red-fronted brown lemurs, black-and-white ruffed lemurs and more. From Ranomafana you head to Ambalavao, a very attractive small town, with clay houses with wooden balconies and elaborate carvings.
Continuing south you come to Isalo National Park, one of Madagascar's most diverse national parks. The arid rocky landscape is broken by deep canyons, where there are clear tropical pools. In the deciduous woodland surrounding these ring-tailed and red-fronted brown lemurs can be spotted, as well as Verreaux's sifaka. Hikes are rewarding here and if you take your swimsuits you can cool off in the clear rock pools.
The trip ends with time relaxing on the white sandy beach at Ifaty. You can relax and enjoy some swimming and snorkelling in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean.
