Tailor Made Holidays in Mauritius: In the News

More than just beaches: 08-08-2008

More than just beaches18723919With a population of only 1.3 million, the island of Mauritius offers the western traveller a break from the hustle and bustle of life in the big smoke.

But there is more to the African island than simply lapping up the rays on the beach in the honeymooners' paradise.

Mauritius boasts some stunning wilderness beyond its palm-lines shores and the more adventurous can literally immerse themselves in what the island's interior regions have to offer.

Canyoning, a cross between abseiling and swimming, involves descending cliffs, going through waterfalls and diving into mountain rock pools and is a popular way of taking in the breathtaking vistas on offer.

On the other side of the beach, sub-scooters offer a unique and more laid back alternative to scuba diving.

The miniature submarines allow the user to "drive" around three meters under water, guided by divers.

For those who like to stay dry, mountain biking is also a popular way of seeing the island, as is zip lining – often done 30 meters above the famous sugar cane plantations.

Despite it's small size, the island has a lot to offer the modern traveller, be they a loved up honeymooner, or an intrepid adrenaline junkie.
