Mozambique is the most beautiful untouched beach destination I know, with coral islands with idyllic sandy beaches and small fishing villages.

Mozambique is wild, beautiful and undeveloped. The coastline has mile upon mile of palm-fringed white beaches. There are tiny villages where ngalawas are moored to mangrove trees, tailors sew dhow sails on old Singer sewing machines and children play football in sandy squares. Offshore, there are small islands where nomadic fishermen built makeshift huts and turtles come ashore to nest.
Two of Mozambique’s archipelagos – the Bazaruto & Quirimba Archipelagos, have a few small lodges on. These are very low key with cottages under baobabs and where swimsuits, a snorkel mask and bare feet are the regular dress code. Until recently, the mainland has remained completely off limits for all but the most intrepid of travellers. In the north, elephant roam unfettered by boundaries, the great Rovuma River is yet to be bridged, and villages on the watery expanses of Lake Niassa have yet to see outside visitors.
With improved air travel, however, the mainland is receiving visitors for the first time. The Niassa Game Reserve’s first camp has finally opened, there is a tiny beach lodge at Guludo and transport is almost reliable. Nothing works like clockwork but if you want to explore a country before others discover it, Mozambique is the place for you.
