The Polana Hotel has a superb location on Avenida Julius Nyerere on a low cliff overlooking the Indian Ocean. It is Maputo's most prestigious hotel. The Polana was designed by the renowned architect Sir Herbert Baker, who also created Cape Town's Mount Nelson Hotel. Neglected during the years of the civil war, the Polana was renovated with no expense spared in the early 1990's, since when it has reclaimed its status as one of the most elegant and well-run hotels in Africa. An impressive marble reception area and wrought iron lift lead you through to the rooms which have every comfort. Well appointed, they have air-conditioning, television, internet access and sparkling en suite bathrooms. There is a gym, casino, gourmet restaurant and coffee shop. Finally, set under tall palm trees outside, there is a glorious swimming pool with views over the Indian Ocean.
