Take a fly-in safari to the Skeleton Coast

North of Swakopmund the full bleakness of this inhospitable coastline becomes apparent.The Skeleton Coast got its name from the ships and unlucky sailors who perished after being shipwrecked on its barren shores. On a fly-in safari one can reach completely untouched areas where few people have ventured, where enormous sand dunes come right down to sea and it's possible to view the highly adaptable desert elephants.

Admire the wildlife and rock art of Damaraland

This is a land of wild open space home to many desert adapted species such as giraffes, elephants and rhino. Twyfelfontein has some of the most extensive rock art in Africa some of which dates back almost 6000 years. If that's not old enough for you how about the Petrified Forest near Khorixas. The tree trunks found here are estimated to be 260 million years old.

Drive through Etosha National Park

Etosha is unquestionably one of Africa's finest National Parks with a fantastic array of wildlife. Here you are allowed to drive in your own vehicle, which is in itself quite an experience when elephants lumber across the road in front of you. The waterholes at the rest camps are amazing, particularly in the dry season when the game is virtually lining up to drink. It is a great experience to relax over an early evening drink and watch the game come to you.

Explore Namib Rand National Park

This park bordering Sossusvlei is perfect for exploring the desert away from the crowds. Either relax at one of the upmarket lodges, or if you're energetic take a walking safari and have the desert's landscapes and history brought to life by the outstanding guides.

Explore the sand dunes at Sossusvlei

Within the Namib Naukluft National Park is some of the finest desert scenery anywhere in the world. The most spectacular and accessible section is at Sossusvlei where enormous sand dunes rise some 300m above the surrounding area. Clamber up one of these dunes to see the desert stretching away in seemingly endless ripples constantly reshaped by the winds and changing colour as the day wears on, creating highly photogenic scenes.

Hike in Fish River Canyon

At over 160km in length and reaching a depth of 550m, Fish River Canyon is a real highlight and unique in Africa. Drive to the observation point at Hobas for spectacular views, or if you're feeling energetic hike the 85km trail which offers a wonderful wilderness experience.

Spend time at Swakopmund

With its quaintly German architecture and its beautiful setting on the coast, Swakopmund is an excellent place to spend a few days. Spend some time admiring the numerous historic buildings or eating at The Tug restaurant before taking some day excursions to nearby Sandwich Harbour, where massive sand dunes tower over the sea.
