Arts and Culture Festival opens in Namibia: 19-09-2008

Gemsbok in the desertThe seventh annual arts and culture Festival took place in Windhoek earlier this week showcasing the very best in arts and culture from Namibia, a country more commonly associated with safari holidays.

The festival began with a march of artists, cultural acts and school groups showcasing Namibian culture, as well as for the first time including performers from Indonesia and China who gave the festival an international feel.

The three-day event carried the theme 'Culture is the foundation of a nation' which prime minister Nahas Angula emphasised in his opening address, reported New Era.

"I believe that culture is the backbone of any society, hence the importance of consolidating our culture and the arts industry. As a dynamic process culture is not a mere static set of norms and values."

One million travellers are expected to visit Namibia in 2008 according to the Namibia Tourism Board (NTB), an increase of 11 per cent since 2006.

It is a popular honeymoon destination and has developed facilities for those seeking a luxury holiday or adventure holiday break.
