South Africa sets a surfing record: 03-09-2007

The world record for number of surfers riding a wave is now held by the South African city of Cape Town.
As part of an initiative to raise awareness for global warming, the Kahuna Surf Academy organised the Earthwave Global Surf Challenge to stage attempts to break the Guinness World Record for "most surfers riding one wave simultaneously" in different countries around the world.
The event occurs annually on the first Sunday in September in famous surfing locations such as Argentina, Australia, Brazil, England, the island of Reunion, South Africa and Tahiti.
In Cape Town last year 310 surfers paddled out to catch the big wave, but only 71 were able to get up and ride the wave for at least five seconds. However, this was enough to beat the world record, which had previously been set in Ireland last year.
Additionally, nearly 1,000 packets of seeds for indigenous South African trees were given out as an attempt to encourage them to plant the seeds to offset the effects of climate change.
