South African tourism board to provide boost for locals: 10-09-2007

South African tourism board to provide boost for locals18274079South Africa's North West Parks and Tourism Board is keen to ensure that many of the region's natural sites are preserved and protected.

The country boasts a rich heritage but there are concerns that more needs to be done to help provide support to locals to ensure that the South Africa landscape remains unspoilt, reports Buanews.

Water affairs and forestry minister, Lindiwe Hendricks, explained to villagers at the recent unveiling of the Taung Dam Memorial that it is key for everyone to remain committed to protecting the value of local heritage.

Therefore it is hoped that a new tourist board initiative will ensure a protected environment around the Taung Dam as well as creating a number of job opportunities for local people in the region's growing tourism sector.

Taung, meaning the "place of the lion", was the discovery site of the Taung skull, which is thought to belong to one of the earliest hominids that lived around 2.5 million years ago. As well as a special monument to mark the discovery there is also a spectacular gaming reserve and an educational centre selling a wide range of locally-produced goods.
