Located just south of Hermanus, Grootbos is part rustic lodge, part scientific research centre, involved in preserving the remarkable flora and fauna of the region and sharing its mysteries with guests. Built on a hillside overlooking the bay, amidst milkwood forest and resurgent fynbos, the lodge is a base for guided explorations of the countryside and shoreline. Accommodation at the lodge is in very large cottages, which offer simple, modern comfort with African and Scandinavian influences. Qualified guides are on hand to tour the private reserve by vehicle, while horseback riders are catered for with the estate’s own stables. Boat trips are also available, to discover the coastal seabirds and marine mammals.
