The swathe of country stretching from the Kruger Park in the east to the Botswana border in the west contains some of the country’s most dramatic scenery, two of its major cities and one of its legendary resorts. It is one of the major hubs for accessing northern South Africa and the Kruger Park.
In Johannesburg an urban revival is underway and you can also find some of South Africa’s best restaurants, shops and nightlife. For the adventurous there are also flea markets to visit in search of a bargain. Neighbouring Pretoria is more sedate, with its pretty jacaranda-lined streets, and the stately Union Buildings. As both the Blue Train and Rovos Rail run to and from Pretoria, passengers normally spend time in this attractive city before or after their train journeys.
North West Province has game reserves that have some of the most beautiful scenery in the country. In addition to these, the province is also home to Sun City, the resort carved out of the bush, where you can swim, play golf, gamble and relax in a fantasy environment on the fringes of a beautiful game reserve. The Northern Cape is huge, covering one-third of the land mass of South Africa, yet is easily the least populated province. Typifying this remoteness is the Kalahari Desert, an area of stunning red dunes, surprisingly prolific wildlife, and site of one of the largest conservation areas in Africa.
