Tailor Made Holidays in Tanzania: In the News

'Sustainable safaris' proving popular in Tanzania: 20-03-2008

Walking safari in the SelousA new way of going on an African safari is proving increasingly popular, the Guardian has reported.

According to the British daily, alternatives are being sought to the traditional African safari, and the sustainable safari is one of them.

The sustainable safari focuses on delivering all the highlights of a standard expedition to the African bush but at a reduced environmental cost.

One of the ways in which this is achieved is through the foregoing of the flight to the park itself, such as the one into the Ruaha National Park in Tanzania from the nearest town, Iringa, 110 kilometres away.

Instead, sustainable safari visitors choose to stay outside of the park boundary and go on walking safaris rather than drive around the park.

As well as being more environmentally-friendly, walking safaris can also be more fruitful than driving safaris - they afford a chance for the traveller to notice things that would otherwise have disappeared in a cloud of dust.
