Audley Safaris in Zambia
Zambia’s main game areas are the Kafue National Park, Lower Zambezi National Park and the two Luangwa National Parks (South and North). Distances between the parks are large and the roads poor, so we will usually fly you from one to another.
Walking safaris were pioneered in Zambia and remain a highlight of any safari. We use professional guides teamed with armed scouts and keep group sizes very small.
Zambia is renowned for its night drives which offer the chance to see a myriad of nocturnal life, of which the highlight is often the leopard.
Finally, it’s possible to do plenty of open 4WD safaris, boat trips and fishing.
Accommodation
Accommodation in Zambia is comfortable and friendly. Typically a lodge and a few satellite bush camps are owned by one safari operator, often a family business. The main lodge will have four or five rooms. En suite bathrooms are open to the sky and sometimes visited by tree frogs. 4WD safaris, walks, night drives and boating are all possible. The satellite bush camps tend to be in areas with no roads and focus on walking safaris. Typically these have simple chalets made of reed and thatch. Overlooking rivers or waterholes, the dining room might be under a sausage tree and the bar visited by elephants as well as guests.
Zambia's Safari Houses
Over the last year Zambia has pioneered a new concept - the safari house. Four beautiful houses have been built in the middle of the Zambian bush, with spacious living areas, character bedrooms and luxurious bathrooms. On stepping out through the front door, however, you are in the middle of the bush and might encounter puku on the lawn or even an elephant. These luxury houses are ideal for groups of friends or families. Luangwa House and Robin’s House are located in the heart of the South Luangwa. Chongwe River House is in a grove of winterthorn trees in the Lower Zambezi National Park. Tangala House is on the banks of the Zambezi River and near a rather noisy pod of hippos.
The safari houses are ideal for families, which the Zambians welcome with open arms. The houses come complete with guides and activities that can be tailored to each specific family. Game drives can be enjoyed together or children can enjoy their own special safari programme. There is a range of activities for them, from walks to collect seed pods to tracking lessons. For younger children the kitchen and gardens are a highlight and they can bake cookies, collect hens’ eggs and pick pineapples from the garden.
