You would think that is was difficult to try and combine a wonderful, well deserved trip to South Africa with “doing your bit for the environment”. In a culture where we are constantly aware of food miles, Fair Trade and carbon offsetting, how can you help when you are actually in the country if you do not want to visit a local school or build a hut?
One organisation in South Africa has made this a much easier task. Fair Trade in Tourism, South Africa (FTTSA) encourages the tourist industry to operate with fair pay and working conditions, ethical business practices and respect for human rights, culture and the environment. They award FTTSA accreditation to those lodges, hotels and local operators who meet their very stringent targets in these fields, assessed during a rigorous inspection period.
Whilst staying in South Africa you will probably notice the campaign “Proudly South African” which promotes South African companies, products and services which are helping to create jobs and economic growth in the country. You might not notice it, but from the local cashew nuts in the mini bar to the Charlotte Rhys luxury bath products in your shower, a lot of thought is put into what is and isn’t in your room.
Visit the FTTSA website for more information about Fair Trade in South Africa and the additional properties that we can incorporate as part of a tailor-made trip to South Africa.
