Il Moran
Masai Mara National Reserve
Il Moran occupies a superb spot above the Mara River.
Sitting in camp you can often hear the hippo grunting, the bark of baboons, see vultures perched on tree tops and at night, calls of hyena and lion are not infrequent. Add to this one of the Mara's most luxurious camps and you have a very special place indeed.
Il Moran has 10 tents, all spread along and facing towards the river. The tents are probably the largest in Kenya, and also the most luxurious. Each has a spacious stone veranda, with tables and chairs (perfect for a private lunch). Inside, there are king-sized beds of beautifully hewn wood, hand carved wardrobes, big luggage chests and comfortable wicker chairs. The en suite bathroom is equally spacious and has a shower, claw-footed bath, twin basins and wc.
Not far from the tents is a dining room and living room, furnished with comfortable sofas and rugs on the floor. Meals have many courses and are exquisitely prepared and served by candlelight. As the camp is unfenced you must always be guided back to your tent at night.
Il Moran has no electricity and camp is lit only by lanterns and candlelight. Overall it's wild and yet supremely comfortable - one of our favourite camps in the Mara.
