Green Season in Kenya

The 'green season' in Kenya is often overlooked but it's a good time for the wildlife and visitor alike. The quantity and quality of game viewing is amongst the best on the continent, and even the most hardened safari-goer will find something to delight and surprise.

What is the 'green season' and why visit during this period? Here we list several good reasons why a visit to Kenya during this time is well worth considering.

When is the green season?

There are two distinct periods: when the 'short rains' fall in November; and either side of the 'long rains', so from March and early June.

Why visit during the green season?Storm clouds gather

  • You generally have the parks and reserves to yourself.
  • You will receive more personal attention from guides and camp staff.
  • Accommodation is quieter as there are far fewer other guests around.
  • It’s a time of plenty for the animals and they take full advantage of the abundant food as well as giving birth to their young.
  • Although the wildlife is a little harder to spot because of the increased vegetation, you certainly shouldn't have to wait too long before seeing something new and you should still see all the animal types you would normally see during the dryer months.
  • Finally, prices are cheaper.
