Accommodation in Madagascar: Masoala Forest Lodge

Our Rating: Simple

Masoala Forest Lodge

Masoala National Park

Masoala Forest Camp is a small and simple, constructed of bamboo, palm and wood.

It is built in a small clearing in the primary rainforest of Masoala, above an idyllic beach. The sand is deep yellow in colour and enormous trees hang over the beach. There are large granite boulders and when the weather is good swimming and snorkelling off the beach is possible.

The camp consists of five meru-style tents dotted around the clearing. Each is on a raised wooden deck and underneath a palm roof. Inside there are two beds, a table with jug of water and small towel. There is a deck both in front of the tent where there are some canvas chairs and behind the tent where there is a hammock. Bathroom facilities are shared with a number of individual little huts about ten metres from the tents having WC's and cold showers. At the centre of the clearing is a simple palm and bamboo structure which has a large wooden dining table in and a few comfortable chairs.

The camp does not have a host or manager, rather you will be looked after by your guide. The camp staff are friendly, if shy and a few words of Malagasy will go a long way.

The chef, Estrina is a lovely woman who is particularly good at her job. From a very basic kitchen she conjures up wonderful food using fresh local ingredients.
