Day 1London
You will fly this evening to Johannesburg from London overnight.
This morning you will land in Johannesburg. Here you will catch your next flight on to Lilongwe. Upon arrival in Malawi you will clear immigration before being driven to your hotel for the evening.
You will leave Lilongwe today and enjoy the wonderful drive on which you can enjoy the varied landscapes of rural Malawi. Following the course of the Shire River you will enter the Liwonde National Park. From here things become gradually more wild and remote before you arrive at the Mvuu Wilderness Camp for a three night stay.
A full day to enjoy the game watching on offer from Mvuu Camp. In the national park you will see hippo, elephant, impala and crocodile, plus some wonderful bird life and less common mammals such as the warthog.
Another packed day of safari activities from Mvuu. In a protected area of the national park there are zebra and two black rhino which have been introduced. Another undoubted highlight are the river cruises on the Shire, a different perspective from which to view the excellent game.
You will leave Liwonde today and be driven to Cape Maclear. The drive is lovely and takes you through lots of rural Malawi.
There are a number of water sports you can participate in at Danforth Yachting. Included in the price of your stay are non motorised watersports If you are feeling active, you can borrow mountain bikes or explore the Cape Maclear area on foot.
There is a dive shop at Danforth and the lake provides a comfortable environment for beginners to try their first dive. Your hosts Howard and Michelle also own a yacht, the Mufasa, and a sunset cruise on board is a great pleasure.
In the morning you will be driven to Kayak Africa's headquarters at Cape Maclear, on the southern shores of Lake Malawi. Here you can choose to either kayak for around an hour or enjoy a short boat transfer to Mumbo Island. On this gorgeous, unspoiled island you will spend three nights in a spacious, en suite luxury tent.
On Mumbo Island you are provided with your own kayak and snorkelling equipment. Lake Malawi is at its beautiful best here, so you can spend the day swimming, paddling and looking for some of the many species of brilliantly coloured fish.
Diving in Lake Malawi is a unique experience - if you'd like to try it there will be an extra charge payable to Kayak Africa and you will need to let them know in advance. Alternatively, there are some fabulous walks on Mumbo Island. It has never been populated so is still in a completely natural state, and you can spend the day exploring the stunning fig, baobab and miombo woodland.
You will catch the boat this morning back to Cape Maclear and be driven back to Lilongwe to catch your flight to South Africa. This evening you will catch your flight back to the UK.
