  • Colourful birdlife

Rwanda is home to Africa's first National Park, Virunga, which was created back in 1925. It was done to protect its most famous wildlife - its gorillas. However, while its primates will be at the top of you to-see list the country's montane forests contain over 700 bird species with many, such as Grauer’s Swamp-warbler, being regionally endemic.

  • Rural scenery

Up until relatively recently montane forest occupied one third of the territory of present-day Rwanda. Now these ancient forests are mainly restricted to the three main parks: Volcanoes National Park, Nyungwe Forest National Park and Akagera National Park. By visiting any one of these you will see a great diversity of fauna and flora.

Virunga Lodge

Volcanoes National Park

Virunga Lodge is an eco-friendly lodge, built close to the Volcanoes National Park.

A central building houses the reception, restaurant and public areas all with magnificent 360 degree views across the Lakes Ruhondo and Bulera and the Virunga Volcanoes.

Ten rustic bandas, simple in design in sympathy with the surroundings and their ecology, are situated around the property. The lodge has a very comfortable feel to it with large rooms and thoughtful local touches. The bar/lounge area is very cosy with a circular open fire in the middle, lots of comfy chairs and plenty of books and board games.

Virunga Lodge prides itself on being particularly eco-friendly with long-drop loos, bucket showers, furniture made from local materials, naturally wild gardens and solar power. They also employ local staff who are very friendly and cook wonderful meals.

The only downside to this lodge is the distance to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters. The journey takes about 45 minutes along a bumpy road. It is an interesting drive with stunning views and you will pass lots of locals along the roadside going about their daily business so if you don't mind the journey time, it is an ideal lodge to base yourself at for a few days of gorilla tracking activities.
