Berg-en-Dal Restcamp
Southern & Central Sectors Kruger National Park, Kruger & The Escarpment
This is a SANpark restcamp that is located in the far south of Kruger, close to the Malelane Gate. The scenery in this part of the park is stunning, with rolling plains of savannah punctuated by steep granite 'koppies' that provide a good lookout for lions hunting at dusk and dawn. Although only just inside the park, the fertility of the soil here means that game viewing on the roads around Berg en Dal is excellent. Giraffe, rhino, wild dog and elephant are especially frequent sightings around Berg en Dal.
Accommodation is in modernized separate thatched bungalows, all of which have their own kitchenette and barbeque ("braai") area. The bungalows are more spacious and more private than at some other SANpark restcamps. There is an excellent pool and a scenic 'rhino' trail around the perimeter of the grounds, which provides an opportunity to view that species on foot. For those not wanting to do their own braai, there is also the Apple Leaf restaurant. This overlooks a dam and serves hearty bush cuisine, offering the opportunity for game viewing even whilst you are eating dinner. We have found that the resident monkeys can be a bit of a nuisance around the restaurant at breakfast time, but the staff work hard at shooing them away.
