Fugitive's Drift Lodge
The Battlefields, Kwazulu-Natal
Fugitive’s Drift is named after the ford where British soldiers fleeing the carnage at Isandlwana crossed the Buffalo River back into British Natal, and where Lts.
Coghill and Melvill made a last desperate attempt to save the Regimental Queen’s Colour, earning them the first posthumous Victoria Crosses. The lodge is awash with memorabilia amassed by the owner, David Rattray, one of the foremost authorities on the Anglo-Zulu war, and sits in pretty gardens with wonderful views of the surrounding countryside.
The eight rooms, dotted throughout the gardens, are colonial in style and very comfortably furnished with private verandas.
