South Africa
Southern right whale, near Walker Bay
For many, the Western Cape and the Garden Route are the most beautiful and varied of all the country's attractions.
Just under an hour's drive from Cape Town is the Winelands region, which as well as wine is famous for its history, beauty and culture. Also not far from here is the best land-based whale watching in the world and places like Walker Bay and Hermanus rarely disappoint during the whale migration season.
The Garden Route is a stretch of coastline mainly in the Western Cape, consisting of pretty towns, white-sand beaches, glassy lagoons crossed by low bridges and hillsides covered in vast indigenous forests laced with a network of footpaths.
No first-time trip to South Africa would be complete without a safari, and here again, the country can offer some of the best places in Africa including the legendary Kruger National Park.
Famous for its wine and outstanding whale watching.
A picturesque stretch of coastline some 300km long.
Visit places like the legendary Kruger National Park.
