Wine Tours of South Africa

Within easy driving distance of Cape Town, the valleys of Paarl, Stellenbosch and Franschhoek have become known as the 'Winelands' thanks to their superb growing conditions for European vines. Find out why a visit here is a great idea.

Paarl

Paarl is the third-oldest town in South Africa and is a mosaic of the most superb examples of Cape Dutch, Victorian, Edwardian and Art Deco architecture.

Once visited by Charles Darwin, this scenic little town is now reknowned for its vineyards. Aside from visiting one of the many wine estates (and tasting the wine of course!), other interesting attractions in and around the town include a crocodile farm, snake park and glass-blowing studio.

Wine estates we recommended in Paarl

  • Fairview - Arguably the most visited wine estate in the winelands, with good reason. Cheese and wine of notable quality, and renowned for its ‘Goats do Roam’
  • Siedelberg - This pretty estate established back in 1692 offers the unusual extra attraction of a glass blowing studio where you can watch the craftsmen at work. There is also a deli, a restaurant with lovely shady terraces and beautiful views.
  • Nederburg - Nederburg is one of Paarl’s greatest crowd drawers. This famous winery (est 1791) is as renowned for its award-winning wines as its hospitality. The most decorated winery, with more prizes than any other in the country.

The Grande Roche is in our opinion the best hotel in Paarl, possibly the whole of the Winelands.
The Roggeland, with its classic whitewashed Cape Dutch exterior dating to the 1770s, is another fine hotel we recommend.
