Addo Elephant National Park
The Eastern Cape Game Areas, South Africa
Though once farmed, vast tracts of the Eastern Cape have now been returned to the wild.
Thanks to pioneering conservation initiatives the original landscape has been restocked with indigenous game.
The 'Big Seven'
The largest is the Greater Addo National Park, formed from the original Addo Elephant National Park, which has stretched this wilderness region south to include coastal dunes and an offshore marine reserve. This exciting expansion now means the Addo is the only place in South Africa that is home to the 'Big Seven' (the usual Big Five as well as great white sharks and southern right whales).
Run by SANParks, there is a variety of accommodation available from self-catering bungalows to permanent tented camps, as well as various activities on offer including game drives and game walks. Alternatively you do not have to take part in guided activities, and can instead drive round the park at your own pace.
