The Klein Karoo, South Africa
Whilst travelling along the Garden Route we can highly recommend a few days in the Oudtshoorn area.
An area of spectacular beauty it has plenty to offer the visitor, from the ostrich farms at Oudtshoorn to the Cango Caves, beautiful nature reserve of De Hoop and tiny town of Calizdorp.
In the Victorian era, there was something of a craze for ostrich feathers in the UK. Enterprising merchants soon discovered that the Oudtshoorn area was the ideal environment for raising ostriches, and a very prosperous town developed, rich in grand, sandstone "feather palaces".
The ostrich farms and palaces still exist, though mainly farming for meat and leather and for the enjoyment of visitors.
