Reasons To
Visit South Africa

  • Self Drive

The most economical and by far the most popular way to experience South Africa is on a self drive. The roads are good, traffic tends to be light and driving is on the left.

  • Wine Tasting

Within easy driving distance of Cape Town, the valleys of Paarl, Stellenbosch and Franschhoek have become known as 'The Winelands'. Here you can admire the manicured rows of green and russet vines and even stop to sample the local tipple.

Hermanus and Walker Bay, near Cape Town, are perhaps the best places in the world to spot whales from the shore (Jun-Dec). Whale watching trips from boats are also popular in South Africa.

Learn how Ghandi, Paul Kruger and Winston Churchill were all involved in the battle of Spioenkop, during the Boer War, or how a hundred British soldiers held off some 4,000 Zulus at Rorke’s Drift, and how nearly 1,800 were killed a few hours earlier at the battle of Isandlwana.

Visit The Madikwe Game Reserve, South Africa

Madikwe was the site for one of the largest-ever game relocation operations from 1991-97, and 8,000 animals were moved into this malaria free reserve. As well as the Big Five you can see rare wild dogs.

The Madikwe Game Reserve

South Africa

Located right up against the Botswana border near Gabarone, the Madikwe is one of the most remote game parks in South Africa.

Game relocation programme

It was the site for one of the largest-ever game relocation operations, Operation Phoenix: over six years from 1991-97, 8,000 animals were moved into this new, malariafree reserve.

Africa as it used to be

They took their time to settle but the reserve slowly reverted to its natural state, and now provides good game viewing in a spectacular setting. With great ridges running through the park dotted with rounded boulders looking out over extensive plains it offers the chance to experience what Africa must have been like hundreds of years ago.

As well as the Big Five, the reserve is probably the best place in the country to get good sightings of wild dogs.
