Reasons To
Visit Tanzania

  • Beaches

It is extremely easy to add some beach relaxation in Zanzibar after a tiring safari on the mainland; the beaches are stunning and diving is excellent. You don't have to travel far either as the island is only a 30 minute flight from Dar Es Salaam. Tanzania is therefore the ideal location to combine a safari and beach break.

Tanzania has more than 1,000 species of birds and some spectacular places to view them. Lake Natron is also the only known breeding ground for East Africa's millions of lesser flamingos which cover the lake between August and October.

  • Chimpanzees

The Mahale Mountains - towering almost 2km above the shore of Lake Tanganyika are home to some of the last remaining wild chimpanzees. There are currently around 900 which are habituated to humans, and tracking them is a magical experience.

  • Great Migration

One of the highlights of the Serengeti National park is the great annual migration which passes through this amazing wilderness. Up to 1.8 million wildebeest and zebra have been counted doing their annual trip in search of the sweet grasses and the rains.

Accommodation in Tanzania: Ngorongoro Crater Lodge

Our Rating: Opulent

Ngorongoro Crater Lodge

Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Crater Lodge is in a class of its own. Perched on the rim of the crater it is Tanzania's most opulent lodge. It is a place of panelled walls, roaring fires, chandeliers and liveried staff. For a night or twos stay it is an experience not to be missed.

There are three separate camps in Crater Lodge; North Camp, with 12 rooms, South Camp with 12 rooms and Tree Camp with six rooms. The camps are quite separate and each have their own main lodges and adjacent rooms.

In each lodge you will find a sumptuous living room with roaring fire, velvet sofas, rich rugs and antique tables laden with sherry decanters, crystal, bronze statues and old books. Across the panelled hall is a dining room, positively sparkling with starched white tablecloths, gleaming silver and menus full of three course meals. Each room has a large central chandelier made by the Maasai.

Set on the lip of the crater, all the rooms are very large. A panelled hall leads first into a bedroom and living room. Leather armchairs stand in front of the open log fire, king sized velvet beds stand under elaborate headboards and raw silk curtains hang from the vast windows. There are baths and showers in the bathroom and outside a large veranda has stunning views of the crater.

At night, zebra often come up to the lodge to graze and thus you are surrounded by wildlife from sunrise to sunset. Whilst staying at the crater we recommend you are extremely cautious of the buffalo which sometimes graze around the lodge, they are wild and so can sometimes be dangerous.
