Reasons To
Visit Tanzania

  • Beaches

It is extremely easy to add some beach relaxation in Zanzibar after a tiring safari on the mainland; the beaches are stunning and diving is excellent. You don't have to travel far either as the island is only a 30 minute flight from Dar Es Salaam. Tanzania is therefore the ideal location to combine a safari and beach break.

  • Big Cats & Safari Wildlife

Tanzania has some of Africa's most famous and best national parks and reserves where you are guaranteed fantastic big cat sightings. The Serengeti, Selous and the Crater are just some of the best game viewing areas to visit.

  • Birds

Tanzania has more than 1,000 species of birds and some spectacular places to view them. Lake Natron is also the only known breeding ground for East Africa's millions of lesser flamingos which cover the lake between August and October.

  • Chimpanzees

The Mahale Mountains - towering almost 2km above the shore of Lake Tanganyika are home to some of the last remaining wild chimpanzees. There are currently around 900 which are habituated to humans, and tracking them is a magical experience.

  • Great Migration

One of the highlights of the Serengeti National park is the great annual migration which passes through this amazing wilderness. Up to 1.8 million wildebeest and zebra have been counted doing their annual trip in search of the sweet grasses and the rains.

  • Local Culture

Tanzania has an evocative mix of people and cultures with 120 ethnic groups making up the diverse population. The largest group are the Sukuma but perhaps the most memorable are the Maasai who you will often see in Northern Tanzania herding their cattle, goats and sheep.

Sand Rivers

Selous Game Reserve

Offer available: Tanzania & Zanzibar Honeymoon Special: 14 days from £4,390 per person, saving up to £890 per personMore details

Sand Rivers stands hidden from view on a bend of the Rufiji River.

The lodge has spectacular views over the river and the unspoilt wilderness beyond. There is a small resident pod of hippo nearby and it is not unusual to see African skimmers on the sandbanks in the middle of the river.

Sand Rivers has five stone and thatch cottages and two suites. All rooms are built into the riverine forest and are open with lovely views of the river.

They are very spacious and have big beds with large mosquito nets, armchairs, dressing tables (which birds often sit on looking at themselves in the mirror) and bathrooms with flush toilets, basins and hot showers, the furniture is all made from locally sourced materials and is rustic but fabulous.

The suites are really spacious and stylish and have a large lounge area, sunloungers, private plunge-pools and spectacular views over the Rufiji River. The main dining and bar area is under thatch and has spectacular views. Nearby, you can watch the bright yellow weaver birds building their nests in a tree, and see bushbabies up close in the evenings.

Meals served around the carved wooden table are sociable, fun and the food is excellent. Finally, there is a lovely swimming pool and small curio shop.

Activities at Sand Rivers are superb. It is possible to enjoy half and full day game drives in open 4WD's, walking safaris, boat trips and fishing on the river, visits to the Tagalala hot springs and specially tailored fly camping trips.
