    The Seychelles is home to well over 200 species of birds that vary from residents that stay all year around, to migrants who pass through with the seasons. Bird Island, as the name suggests, is alone home to around 800,000 pairs of sooty terns.

    If you visit from Oct-Jan you may be lucky enough to be joined by the Hawksbill turtles. Now critically endangered, they come ashore to dig their nests in the sand and then lay their eggs. A couple of months later (Dec-Mar)the hatchlings scuttle back into the sea during the night. The rare Green Turtle can be seen from June to September.

On the northwest coast of Praslin, Lémuria Resort is a five star resort and the ultimate in luxury.

It is situated above the Anse Kerlan cluster of beaches where turtles lay their eggs and the sand is soft and white. The beaches are sheltered and water calm and it is ideal for swimming and snorkelling. With white granite boulders and a profusion of palm trees it is hard to find a more idyllic spot.

The hotel itself has been carefully designed and 104 suites blend into the surrounding vegetation. Each suite has a wide veranda and all are seafacing, although there is vegetation which stops a full sea view, the vegetation is there however to keep it natural and stop erosion. The beach is a mere ten metres or so away across the lawn. Inside, stylish designs and space are the order of the day, with rooms having every facility including air-conditioning, TV, CD players and bath, shower and luxurious lotions in the en-suite bathrooms. The facilities in Lemuria are extensive.

There is a fabulous 18-hole golf course, three swimming pools, floodlit tennis courts, sailing and a dive centre and beauty spa with a small gym.

After a hard day relaxing on the beach a drink at the sunset bar is a must, followed by dinner in one of the three restaurants, either the Seahorse, Legends or the restaurant overlooking the beach.
