The islands are surrounded by many submerged reefs, which proved treacherous for early explorers. They are mostly deserted or have small coconut plantations with a handful of workers, and only Desroches offers accommodation.

There is plenty to do on Desroches, including walking, bicycling, swimming and snorkelling. The diving is particularly good, with a myriad of reefs to choose from.
