Reasons To
Visit Uganda

  • Safari Wildlife

Many people assume Uganda doesn't have much large game and the only reason to visit is to see gorillas. This, however, would be a mistake as the various parks are home to many large mammal species, including lion, leopard, hyena jackal, buffalo and elephant. There are also numerous antelope and bird species.

    Safari Wildlife
  • Chimpanzees

It is home to the greatest variety and highest concentration of primates in East Africa. There are 13 primate species found within the forest including chimpanzees, red-tailed monkey, L'Hoest's monkey, blue monkey, grey-cheeked mangabey, red colobus and black-and-white colobus.

  • Gorillas

Making your way through the bamboo forests and into the dense montane forest you will trek for between two and five hours to find your allocated group of mountain gorillas. The sometimes strenuous walk to find the gorillas is always made up for by this truly unique experience!

  • Safari

Something a bit different which you can enjoy at the Semliki Wildlife Reserve is a night game-drive. Setting off after dinner, you may catch a glimpse of a leopard in a tree; Serval cats, civets, Ugandan kob, mongoose, the strange triple-winged nightjars and nocturnal bush hogs are regularly spotted.

  • Village Life

Few countries in Africa provide so many opportunities to view such colourful and vibrant village life. Driving through the lush rural countryside numerous villages are scattered along terraced hillsides. The interaction with the local people in these remote locations often generates some of the most memorable travel experiences.

Our country specialists have travelled the length and breadth of Uganda - here are a few of their favourite things to do

Uganda has enormous diversity, from has open savannah covered in game, to acacia woodland and dense rainforest.

Its most famous inhabitants are probably its mountain gorillas.

Mountain gorillas of Uganda

The sometimes strenuous walk to find gorillas is always made up for by the truly unique experience of actually seeing them close up. You can spend one hour with them once you have found the first gorilla and the visits are timed to coincide with their rest periods, so you can watch as they play, eat, groom and lounge around in a clearing in the forest.

Diverse ecosystems

On the elevated basin between the eastern and western branches of the Great Rift Valley, Uganda is where the dry savannah of East Africa meets the dense rainforest of West Africa, whilst to the north is arid semi-desert. A fertile country of dramatic mountain ranges, beautiful lakes, rivers and waterfalls, and abundant wildlife including a remarkable diversity of birdlife, it is no surprise that Uganda is considered one of the most diverse and fascinating of the East African countries.

Tourism in its infancy

Whilst Uganda’s tourism is still very low key, there are a few simple lodges and tented camps in the national parks and reserves. Roads are relatively good and the easiest way to travel is in a 4WD driven by your guide. This gives you the freedom to travel at your own pace whilst your guide provides valuable insight on the flora and fauna of this fascinating country.
