Reasons To
Visit Zambia

  • Big cats & safari wildlife

Zambia is a safari destination for the connoisseur, boasting a fantastic range of wildlife in its diverse national parks. Many amazing game experiences can be had within the national parks, with lion virtually guaranteed and leopard in abundance. This superb array of game can be appreciated on foot, by car or on the water.

  • Birds

Zambia offers the full range of fascinating, colourful birdlife you’d expect to see on safari, with a range of water based birds in the Lower Zambezi and Kafue National Parks. The Bangweulu Wetlands are one of the few places on the planet where you can see the impressive Shoebill Stork.

  • Boat trips

An evening cruise on the Zambezi in Livingstone and game viewing from Kafue’s Lufupa River are wonderfully relaxing, but best of all are the water based activities in the Lower Zambezi. Drifting slowly down river, observing elephants coming into drink as the sun goes down is one of the definitive African experiences.

  • Night drives

With night drives offered in all of the major national parks, Zambia is arguably the best destination in Africa to observe nocturnal wildlife. The South Luangwa in particular is known for outstanding leopard sightings, and there is a tangible excitement to watching how wildlife behaves after dark.

  • Victoria Falls

By any judgement Victoria Falls is an awesome force of nature. During the wet season up to 550 million litres of water cascades over the lip of the Falls each minute, offering an intensely photogenic experience. The spectacle that so bewitched David Livingstone is still equally impressive today.

  • Walking safari

With superb guides and remote wilderness, the country that invented the walking safari is still the premier walking destination on the continent. There is nothing quite like approaching elephants or buffalo on foot knowing full well that you are a mere guest in their territory.

Accommodation in Zambia: Kapani Lodge

Our Rating: First Class

Kapani Lodge

South Luangwa National Park

Kapani is an exclusive, privately owned camp situated on a large lagoon beside the Luangwa River accommodating only twenty guests.

The ten brick and thatch rooms are designed for the warmer weather with high ceilings, overhead fans and large gauzed windows. Each of the eight standard suites are in blocks of two and have an en-suite bathroom with shower only as well as a sitting area with a bar fridge. They also have a day bed seat in the lounge that can be used for a child.

The two Lagoon Houses overlook the Kapani Lagoon and are very private and spacious with en-suite facilities including an enormous raised stone bath and separate shower and a spacious covered veranda. The walk in mosquito nets surround the beds and rugs cover the zinc oxide floors. The decor is very simplistic with thin gauze curtains, neutral colours against dark stained wood furnishings with small African ornaments and old photographs of the early days of Norman Carr in Zambia.

The camp is on mains electricity and offers most modern facilities. A thatched building in the centre of camp houses the tiny library, lounge and dining area and is a pleasant place to relax between game-drives. According to the season, dining can be al fresco taken on the terrace as well as taken on a shady platform overlooking the lagoon. This extended platform now houses the bar and a small covered area and is a superb spot from which to enjoy birding. In the mornings, brunch can be taken here whilst a fire burns in an open pit that can be covered for the remainder of the day and relit on cool winter evenings.

There is a small gift shop offering books and local crafts as well as a secluded swimming pool at the far end of camp.

Activities from Kapani include morning and evening game drives in open 4WDs, walking safaris and night drives.
