Zimbabwe has a pleasant year round climate with invariably blue skies and pleasant temperatures. The rains fall from around November to March whilst April to October sees dryer, cooler weather.
Game viewing is traditionally best from June to October when seasonal pools of water dry up in the bush and animals come to the visible water sources such as rivers and waterholes to drink. During the wetter months of November to March animals disperse and are not so readily seen. At this time of year however many animals drop their young and nurseries of antelope are a common sight. Migrant birds arrive and birds adopt bright breeding plumage.
The peak water flow at Victoria Falls comes after the rains from March to May. This can be a particularly dramatic time to see the Falls although at its peak there can be so much water cascading over the top that the spray can obscure the views somewhat – you also get extremely wet! As the dry season progresses so the water over the Falls decreases. This leads to excellent rafting conditions with rafting at its best from August to December.
