Australia City Guide

Thanks to geographical conditions and historical circumstances, Australia's greatest cities vary in size and character, but each is blessed with a sunny climate and is surrounded by natural beauty.

Australia’s oldest and largest city is loud, lively and bustling with a cosmopolitan mix of people.

Sydney.

Around Sydney

Consistently voted as the favourite city of British travellers, Sydney is home to nearly one-quarter of the Australian population, it is not only the cultural and financial heart of the country; it also often represents the first stop on many travellers' itineraries. And what better place to immerse yourself into all things Australian - the sparkling waters of the harbour, the golden sand of the beaches, the hidden pockets of parklands and botanical gardens, the unbeatable fresh food and laid-back charm of its cafes and restaurants, and the great outdoor life that Sydneysiders take for granted.

Sydney's history

Sydney began life in 1788 as a penal colony and dumping ground for Britain’s unwanted felons, a fact which long tainted the cities character but this convict past has now been embraced and echoes of those bygone days can still be seen in areas such as The Rocks and Macquarie Street.

Things to see and do

Sunset over Sydney HarbourOf course Sydney is now famed for its iconic Harbour Bridge and Opera House but beyond this National Parks lay hidden on the city outskirts, with walking tracks leading to spectacular lookouts; sheltered harbour beaches wait alluringly away from the crowds, perfect for dropping anchor and swimming in the potentially the world's most famous water and historical pubs line the cobblestone alleys of the Rocks district which oozes convict history.
