Aboriginal site uncovered in Brisbane: 10-03-2008

Aboriginal site uncovered in Brisbane18502424A significant camping and hunting ground used by Aboriginal people has been uncovered near Brisbane.

Contractors digging a well to supply the area were disrupted by the discovery of the site after they found fragments of human bone during their digging.

According to reports from the New Zealand Herald, an archaeologist, cultural advisor and an elder had all found evidence to suggest the site is important after bones and axes were uncovered.

Christine Parter, a native title advisor to the Mitakoodi junhnjlar people, found the site to be a major burial ground.

"We've gone over the area and found there to be a bigger area - it's very significant for the Mitakoodi people and also from an archaeological perspective.

"That area is a camping ground, a hunting ground, a burial ground - we lived off the river, the Cloncurry River people," Ms Parter added.

A more thorough survey of the site will be conducted and Ms Parter urged companies and councils to work closely with the native Aboriginal people when undertaking projects.

Travellers visiting Australia will find plenty of cultural activities with references to Aboriginal cultures found all over the country.
