Homesick crocodiles find their way back: 27-09-2007

After being relocated hundreds of miles away from their homes, three of Australia's saltwater crocodiles have proved their excellent sense of direction by finding their way back.
The three crocodiles were taken from far north Queensland to several different distances, with one even being moved nearly 250 miles from the east coast of Australia to the west coast.
This was to see if they had the ability to sense their way home, to calculate the possibilities of relocating crocodiles.
However, they were surprised when all three of the crocodiles took the most direct route back to their homes, with one taking 20 days to travel along the Australian coast.
It is thought that this is due to the crocodile's close relation to birds, which is why the two may have a similar interior navigation system.
Crocodiles are thought to be some of the oldest animals on the earth, and have been integrally connected with Australia.
