IYOR is another reason to see the Great Barrier Reef: 06-03-2008

This year is an important one for travellers interested in nature as 2008 is the International Year of the Reef (IYOR)
A worldwide campaign to raise awareness of the value and importance of reef environments, IYOR hopes to encourage people to actively participate in events all over the world.
The programme was officially inaugurated this week but work has already begun, with research into species such as sharks that live in the Great Barrier Reef.
The Great Barrier Reef is one of Australia's most famous natural landmarks and attracts tourists from all over the world.
About 3,000 individual reefs make up the system which is the largest in the world and visitors often take scuba diving trips and glass bottomed boat rides to see some of the species that live amongst the coral.
Visitors making a trip to see the reef will find that it is well managed and sustainable with a percentage of fees going towards research into the reef's environment.
