Australians join together to protect cherished land: 20-08-2008
Australian farmers, gardeners, archaeologists and environmentalists are teaming up to protect artefacts in the Keilor Valley.
The area was once home to super sized animals and holds Aboriginal artefacts from as long as 30,000 years ago.
Despite being rich in history, the valley is currently set to host a new landfill site and locals are coming together in a bid to protect the area.
Wurundjeri elder, Annette Xiberras, said numerous mega fauna skeletons had been recovered in the past and that the area is very important to her people.
"If you call yourself Australian, it's your history too," she told the Brimbank Leader.
Back in the 1940s, one of the oldest human remains in Australian history was discovered in the valley.
The skull was thought to be around 14,000 years old.
Keilor is part of Australia's most populated city, Melbourne, which is well known as the cultural and sport capital of Australia.
