Last Vietnam MIA found: 01-09-2008

The last remaining Australian MIA soldier from the Vietnam War has been found, according to the Federal Government.

The remains of a man, complete with dogtags belonging to Private David Fisher were found by archaeologists in Southern Vietnam.

Private Fisher died during a rescue operation in the jungle in 1969 when he fell from a rope suspended from a helicopter.

Defence minister Warren Snowdon explained that more tests need to be carried out to establish the remains are indeed those of Private Fisher.

"We don't want to be too presumptive, we need to carry out the scientific work, the forensic work, to make sure we've done it," he told ABC.net.au.

"The remains, we believe, will be released to our Government for repatriation to Australia, and as I say we'll be able to finally give Private Fisher's family the opportunity to say an appropriate good bye to a fallen hero."

Travellers interested in learning more about Australia's part in the Vietnam War may wish to visit the National Vietnam Veterans Museum on Philip Island, Victoria.
